What do I do if my child falls and breaks or loosens or blackens her tooth?
Call the office for an appointment ASAP.
Is it really necessary to floss daily?
Yes, your toothbrush cannot reach the spaces between your teeth, only floss can get behind the last tooth in each arch. The purpose of dental floss is to remove the sticky film on your teeth called plaque, not just to remove a wedged piece of food.
My tooth is abscessed causing a massive toothache, what can I do right away?
Call the office for an appointment ASAP. While you are en route, take Ibuprofen for the pain, and if Dr. Alpert has called in an antibiotic for you, take that as soon as possible.
I currently am taking bisphosphonates for my osteoporosis, is it OK to come in for a visit?
Absolutely. The only danger with taking bisphosphonates is if you are having a surgical procedure such as a tooth extraction. If you do need an extraction the doctor will contact your MD so that an appropriate protocol can be followed.
Should I worry about my mercury fillings? Do you use any special procedures?
Amalgam fillings are still an excellent choice for dental restorations in many cases. They are recommended by the American Dental Association as a good, cost-effective way to restore teeth. There are some situations where the use of dental amalgam would allow you to save a tooth that could not be saved any other way.
My child is almost a year and he’s not cut one tooth? Should I worry?
Children’s growth and tooth eruption patterns vary widely. If you are concerned, feel free to bring your one-year old to the office for a visit. The American Dental Association recommends a child have his/her first dental visit by the time he is one year old, unless you notice a problem sooner.
What is bottle syndrome?
Also called baby bottle tooth decay, this is a serious condition that occurs when teeth are exposed to liquids that contain sugar. The liquid pools around the teeth and gums, providing food for the bacteria in plaque. The bacteria produces acid as a by-product when they consume the sugar that attacks your child's teeth and causes decay.
